Dettifoss Waterfall | Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland

While Markus and I were in Iceland, we saw our fair share of waterfalls. The island is covered in them and after a while, we were a little over waterfalls. Despite seeing almost every waterfall in Iceland, there were two that were incredibly beautiful and unique. The first was Svartifoss and the other is Dettifoss.

The trek to Dettifoss was a bit annoying because there were it was icy with heaps of puddles and tons of tourists At first, I was annoyed and wasn't in the mood to go through all that for another waterfall. At one point, it was like we were being shuffled along with a swarm of bodies. When the falls first came into view, I knew I recognized it from somewhere and then it clicked. It was the setting for the opening scene of Prometheus.  As you can see from the photos below it was totally worth it. Dettifoss is absolutely incredible. Honestly, one of the best waterfalls in Iceland and a must see!

By the third day of our trip, we were so exhausted, but we were running on pure adrenaline and excitement. We drove many miles and stopped at the black sand beaches of Vik. We also knew that we had to get to the Glacier Lagoon by 6pm. So we almost skipped Svartifoss. It was mainly because I was tired and didn't want to do the 45 minute hike to get to the waterfall. Of course Markus worked his magic and convinced me to soldier on. I'm really glad he did, because Svartifoss was definitely in my top three waterfalls in Iceland. After a while all waterfalls tend to look the same, but this waterfall was different. It was surrounded by basalt columns and it was absolutely stunning.

Skógafoss Waterfall | Skogar, Iceland

The final stop of our first day in Iceland was Skógafoss Waterfall. Even though we saw

Seljalandsfoss

right before, it was still absolutley stunning. It's one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland measuring 200 ft tall and 83 ft wide. The fall has been featured in both

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

 and

Thor: The Dark World

. Iceland is a country full of fantasy and magical tales and Skógafoss also has it's own lore.

It's said that the first Viking,

Þrasi Þórólfsson, hid a treasure chest in a cave behind the waterfall. Years later, the chest was discovered by a local man. He was unable to get the entire treasure, but managed to detach one of the rings on the side of the chest.  He then gave the ring to a local church and later was donated to the Skogar Museum. It's also said that when the sun is shining, you can see gold glittering through the water.

Before traveling to Iceland, I booked an eight-day self-drive tour with

Touris

. They were an essential part in making this trip so fantastic. As a part of the package, they provided a very detailed itinerary and map. We spent the first day stopping so much because everything was so beautiful. Along the way, we ended up seeing our first of many waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to go behind the waterfall or hike to the top, but we still got pretty close!
